چکیده
We consider the problem of detecting sparse heterogeneous mixtures in a two-sample setting from nonparametric perspective, where effect manifests itself as positive shift. suggest higher criticism test, and show that it is first-order comparable to likelihood ratio test for generalized Gaussian mixture models all sparsity regimes.

Higher Criticism for Detecting Sparse Heterogeneous Mixtures
Higher Criticism, or second-level significance testing, is a multiple comparisons concept mentioned in passing by Tukey (1976). It concerns a situation where there are many independent tests of significance and one is interested in rejecting the joint null hypothesis. Tukey suggested to compare the fraction of observed significances at a given α-level to the expected fraction under the joint nu...

متن کاملLearning Heterogeneous Functions from Sparse and Non-Uniform Sample
A boosting-based method for centers placement in radial basis function networks (RBFN) is proposed. Also, the influence of several methods for drawing random samples on the accuracy of RBFN is examined. The new method is compared to trivial, linear and non-linear regressors including the multilayer Perceptron and alternative RBFN learning algorithms and its advantages are demonstrated for learn...
متن کاملTesting Homogeneity in a Semiparametric Two-Sample Problem
We study a two-sample homogeneity testing problem, in which one sample comes from a populationwith density f x and the other is from amixture populationwithmixture density 1−λ f x λg x . This problem arises naturally from many statistical applications such as test for partial differential gene expression inmicroarray study or genetic studies for genemutation. Under the semiparametric assumption...
متن کاملThe Two Sample Problem with Censored Data
A medical investigator attempting to compare two different treatments for, say, prolongation of life among disease victims, often finds himself in the following situation: at time T, when it is necessary to end the experiment, or at least evaluate the results up to that time, a certain number of the patients in each treatment group will still be alive. His data will then be represented by two s...
